Dave Baney of 55 Questions on Scaling Up Business Podcast with Bill GallagherWe all heard that we need to coach people and not manage them. We’ve also heard there are principles to great coaching but many of us still doubt our ability to coach. Today’s show is going to make it really simple to find a way to effectively coach your people; it’s called the 3×5 method.

Today’s guest, Dave Baney is the founder and CEO of 55 Questions LLC, and the author of The 3×5 Coach: A Practical Guide to Coaching Your Team for Greater Results and Happier People. David works for Entrepreneurs and CEOs of growth companies that have a driving ambition to crush their competition. He inspires them to lead their organization to game-changing levels of execution by developing customer focused, competitively driven goals and strategies. This results in an environment of accountability and communication where people consistently deliver excellence and results. 

In this show, Dave shares a bit about his professional background and how, working in Italy with McDonald’s, he discovered the difference between managing and coaching people. The government’s termination policies in Italy were quite expensive for the company; you cannot let go of people, you have to pay them to leave. When you cannot simply fire people, you have to find creative ways to influence and inspire them.

Dave also shares about his new book and the 3×5 method. 

We tend to over-manage our people instead of training them to the point where they can become independent and autonomous. There seems to be a disconnect when it comes to the desires of the team and the desires of management, therefore, it’s very hard to motivate a team when you can’t align with them.

The 3×5 method is really about having the team member and manager sit down and agree on each other’s expectations and desires. It offers clear lines of communication between the two parties for, what it seems to be, the very first time.

How fast can a dog sled team run? Well, the answer is, only as fast as the slowest dog. If you had a dogsled team, you would want to work with the slowest dog to help bring him up to speed with the rest of the team. So, what are you doing to help the slowest members of your team learn and grow? This, in essence, is what the 3×5 method is about.
